Proton Mail is a leading privacy-focused email service with over 100M users. Proton offers a free tier, companion tools (including calendar, drive, docs, and sheets), and well reviewed apps for iOS and Android.
Know Before You Go
- To live within the free tier's 1 GB of storage, you'll probably need to get in the habit of deleting messages. Completing account setup/migration steps could get you up to 5 GB.
- Messages include a 'Sent with Proton' footer that can be turned off on paid plans.
- Upgrade to 15 GB of storage, custom domain support for $6.24 / month.
- 'Easy Swtich' can import and forward from an existing Gmail account with a few clicks.
- Docs launched in 2024, and sheets in Dec 2025. They're still maturing and likely won't replace Google or Microsoft's offerings for business/more demanding use cases.
